Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yaradua, has congratulated the Chief of Army Staff, officers, soldiers and veterans on the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting a modern, professional and people-centred Nigerian Army.
In a statement marking the Army’s 163rd anniversary on Monday, Yaradua describes the occasion as a landmark in the nation’s military history, commending the force for more than a century and a half of dedicated service in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the senator says it highlights the military’s constitutional responsibility while reinforcing the importance of professionalism, accountability, innovation and service in modern military operations.
He notes that effective national security depends not only on military capability but also on the trust, confidence and cooperation of citizens, stressing the need for stronger civil-military relations.
Yaradua paid tribute to troops serving in the North-East, North-West and other operational theatres, where they continue to confront terrorism, banditry and other security threats. He praised their courage and sacrifices in protecting communities and restoring hope, while honouring fallen heroes and wishing wounded personnel a speedy recovery.
The lawmaker also reaffirmed the commitment of the Senate Committee on Army to providing robust legislative support, effective oversight and adequate resources to strengthen the Nigerian Army.
According to him, the ongoing review of the Armed Forces Act and other legislative interventions are aimed at creating a fit-for-purpose legal and welfare framework capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Yaradua expressed optimism that the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration would deepen national appreciation for the Army’s legacy, inspire patriotism and further strengthen the partnership between the military and the Nigerian people.
He urged officers and soldiers to remain steadfast, professional and committed to their constitutional duties, assuring them of the continued support of the Senate and Nigerians.
