📚 *Taking a journey back in time!*

This episode of *From the Archives with Benjamin Ubiri* tells the story of *The University of Ibadan — Where Nigeria Began Educating Its Own Future.*

12 years before independence, Nigeria didn’t wait for the British to hand over a flag. On November 17, 1948, University College Ibadan was inaugurated — the first institution of higher learning in Nigeria.

From a College of London to a fully independent university in 1962, UI trained the writers, historians, scientists and civil servants who would go on to shape Nigeria — including the famous Ibadan School of History.

This was more than a university. It was where Nigeria began to think for itself.

Did you know that contesting an election in Nigeria and failing to win a single seat can lead to a political party being deregistered? 🤔🗳️

Under Nigeria’s electoral framework, INEC has the power to deregister parties that fail to meet strict requirements—including failing to secure at least 25% of votes in a presidential election, win any LGA in a governorship race, or secure any seats in the National or State Assemblies. As INEC regulates political groups, these rules protect electoral standards but also raise crucial questions about how smaller parties can survive and build political support. ⚖️🇳🇬

What do you think about INEC’s power to deregister parties—does it help strengthen our democracy or limit political diversity? Drop your thoughts below! 👇🏾
