The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says 97 percent of the ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu have received the formal approval (Agrément) of their respective host countries.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, says the diplomatic process of obtaining Agrément is progressing smoothly and in line with established international diplomatic practice.
According to the Ministry, President Tinubu appointed 69 ambassadors-designate following their screening and confirmation by the Senate.
Of the total number, 65 ambassadors have been accepted by their host countries.
The Ministry explained that the ambassador-designate to the Republic of Togo declined the appointment, and as a result, a request for Agrément was not submitted.
It also disclosed that the ambassador-designate to Algeria died in April 2026, with the process of appointing a replacement already underway.
The statement notes that only two countries are yet to communicate their formal acceptance of Nigeria’s ambassadors-designate.
However, both countries have assured Nigeria that their consent will be granted in due course.
The Ministry says it is actively engaging the relevant authorities in the two countries and remains confident that the outstanding Agréments will be received soon.
It adds that the majority of Nigeria’s ambassadors have already arrived in their respective host countries and presented their Letters of Credence, officially commencing their duties as the personal representatives of President Tinubu.
The Ministry reaffirm its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad in pursuit of the country’s foreign policy objectives and national interests.
