Plateau Killings: IGP Disu Orders Massive Deployment to Restore Peace

By: Oluwakemi Kindness

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a massive deployment of security assets to Plateau State to restore calm and ensure the arrest of those responsible for the recent killings.

This follows the attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of innocent citizens.

In response, the IGP had earlier deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu-Nadada, to Plateau State to assess the security situation, coordinate ongoing operations, and strengthen the existing security architecture.

The latest directive by the Olatunji Disu underscores growing national concern over the persistent cycle of violence in Plateau State, a region that has, over the years, witnessed recurring communal clashes and security breakdowns.

According to a statement on Wednesday night by the Police, the IGP has intensify operations through the deployment of additional tactical teams, Police Mobile Force units, and intelligence operatives, in conjunction with other security agencies.

These measures aim to tackle ongoing security challenges and prevent any further breakdown of law and order across the state.

The statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, added that these actions will continue until normal conditions return. All operational commanders have been instructed to ensure visible policing and actively engage with vulnerable communities.

IGP Disu also called on the public to remain calm and vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

But Observers note that while reactive deployments help to stabilise immediate tensions, long-term peace in Plateau will depend heavily on sustained intelligence gathering, community trust-building, and addressing the root causes of conflict.

IGP Disu further urged citizens to promptly report any incidents or suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities to support ongoing operations.

The IGP commiserates with the Executive Governor of Plateau State and the people of the state, particularly the affected families and residents of Angwan Rukuba community, over the unfortunate incident.

Beyond police action, attention is now on the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to implement lasting political solutions. Engagement with community leaders, traditional rulers, and religious stakeholders is critical to prevent reprisals.
