IGP Orders Restructuring Of Police Monitoring Unit to Boost Accountability

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has approved a major restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at strengthening discipline, accountability, and operational effectiveness.

The reform is designed to refocus the Unit on its core mandate, address identified operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a stronger internal oversight and accountability mechanism within the Force.

Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Streamlined operations

Under the new structure, the Police Monitoring Unit has been streamlined to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments nationwide.

Key investigative and monitoring functions have also been harmonised in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.

New leadership

As part of the restructuring, the IGP has approved a leadership change in the Unit.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aliyu Abubakar has been appointed as the new Head of the Police Monitoring Team to oversee its operations.

Before his appointment, DCP Abubakar served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the FCT and Rivers State Police Commands, where he handled several high-profile investigations.

The IGP reiterated that the restructuring is aimed at deepening professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Nigeria Police Force.

He noted that the Monitoring Unit will play a key role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability across all levels of policing.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained reforms and the delivery of a more professional, accountable, and citizen-focused policing system.
