Toxic Waste Crisis: FG Launches Nationwide Battery Disposal Scheme

By Al-Kadriyar Abdullahi

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide initiative to address the environmental and health risks posed by the improper disposal of small-sized batteries.

The programme, introduced by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, involves the deployment of specially designed receptacles for the safe collection of used batteries across public spaces.

The move is aimed at curbing hazardous contamination of soil, water, and food caused by unregulated disposal and informal recycling practices.

The receptacles—collection bins placed in markets, schools, offices, and other public locations—will target commonly used batteries such as AA and AAA types, button cells found in watches and medical devices, as well as mobile phone batteries.

According to the Minister, the initiative addresses a critical gap in Nigeria’s waste management system, where small batteries are often overlooked due to their low economic value to informal recyclers.

He described the programme as a decisive step toward strengthening environmental protection and reducing exposure to toxic metals.

The scheme introduces a centralised system for the collection, storage, and recycling of battery waste. It will be piloted in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before being expanded nationwide.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Alliance for Responsible Battery Recycling (ARBR) and aligns with Nigeria’s National Policy on Waste and Battery Management introduced in 2022.

The government also signalled stricter enforcement measures, with plans to strengthen compliance monitoring and push for tougher environmental laws.

“We cannot continue to rely on policies without enforcement. There must be consequences to change behaviour,” the Minister said.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by the government to tackle environmental pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices across the country.
