The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has thrown the full weight of the National Assembly behind Professor Dapo Akande’s bid to become a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), describing the renowned legal scholar as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage.
Kalu gave the endorsement on Wednesday while receiving Prof. Akande, who is seeking election to the world’s highest judicial body.
He said the House’s support is rooted in the professor’s exceptional credentials, international reputation, and remarkable contributions to legal scholarship.

According to the Deputy Speaker, Prof. Akande’s candidacy represents an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its presence in international legal institutions and showcase the country’s wealth of intellectual talent.
He commended the United Kingdom for nominating the Nigerian-born scholar, noting that the move reflects global recognition of Akande’s expertise, integrity, and influence in international law.
Kalu also called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to provide robust diplomatic backing for the campaign, stressing that a successful election would be a significant achievement for Nigeria and the African continent.

“Professor Akande’s candidacy is based on merit, excellence, and an outstanding record of service in the field of international law. Nigeria is proud of his achievements and fully supports his aspiration,” Kalu said.
Earlier, Prof. Akande explained that he was in Nigeria to seek the support of key stakeholders for his ICJ election bid.
He pledged to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of international law and the promotion of justice globally if elected.
The legal scholar also expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for its encouragement and support, describing the backing as a major boost to his campaign.
The ICJ, based in The Hague, Netherlands, serves as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations and plays a crucial role in resolving disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on international legal issues.
