President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity and securing the release of all persons held captive across Nigeria, declaring that the country will not surrender to terrorists, bandits, or criminal elements.
The President’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the national interdenominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
According to a statement issued by the SGF’s media aide, Yomi Odunuga, Tinubu stressed that the Federal Government remains resolute in its fight against insecurity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” the President stated.
Tinubu said the protection of lives and property remains a top priority for his administration, noting that recent attacks and abductions across parts of the country highlight the need for intensified security operations.
He assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to secure the safe return of all kidnapped victims while strengthening the capacity of security agencies to protect communities and defend the nation’s territorial integrity.
“The safety of Nigerians remains a top priority of the Federal Government. The recent attacks and abductions are painful reminders that more work remains to be done,” he said.
“The safe return of all persons in captivity remains a national priority. Security agencies and relevant institutions are being supported with the necessary resources to protect lives, secure communities and preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity.”
Tinubu Promises More Action on Economic Hardship
The President also pledged to intensify efforts to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians through improved delivery of democratic dividends.
He acknowledged growing concerns over the rising cost of living, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement in several parts of the country, assuring citizens that the government is taking decisive steps to tackle the challenges.
“The government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Tinubu said.
President Warns Against Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Elections
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, Tinubu urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric.
He warned against turning democracy into a battleground and advised young people not to allow themselves to be used for political violence, misinformation campaigns, or thuggery.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he said.
The President also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, the media, civil society organisations, and families to promote peace, unity, and tolerance as the nation approaches another election cycle.
Tinubu Commends Security Forces, Honours June 12 Heroes
Tinubu praised members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the country and safeguarding democratic governance.
He urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the June 12 heroes by working together to build a safer, more peaceful, and accountable nation.
Nigeria will mark 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule on June 12, 2026, commemorating the return to civilian governance in 1999 and the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists associated with the June 12 struggle.
The anniversary comes amid persistent security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, as well as economic pressures that remain major concerns for citizens and the Federal Government.
