Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic ties with Cuba, with a strong focus on healthcare, trade, agriculture, education and tourism.

He made the remarks in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Palmero, on a courtesy visit.

Kalu said Nigeria and Cuba must fully tap into opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that current trade levels remain low but have strong growth potential.
According to a statement by Levinus Nwabughiogu, his Chief Press Secretary, Kalu describes Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s 200+ million market, while positioning Cuba as a strategic entry point into Latin America and the Caribbean.
Focus on Healthcare, Pharmaceuticals and Technology Transfer
The Deputy Speaker highlighted Cuba’s global strength in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare delivery.
He called for:
* Joint pharmaceutical production
* Vaccine technology transfer
* Medical training and exchange programmes
* Scholarships for Nigerian students in STEM fields
Agriculture, Education and Youth Development
Kalu also stressed cooperation in agriculture, especially in:
* Climate-smart farming
* Organic agriculture systems
* Agricultural research and innovation
He noted that Nigeria’s youthful population presents a major opportunity for education and innovation partnerships with Cuban institutions.

Tourism and Cultural Diplomacy
Both countries were encouraged to expand collaboration in tourism and creative industries.
Kalu highlighted Nigeria’s entertainment sector and Cuba’s tourism strength as key drivers for cultural exchange and economic growth.
Parliamentary Cooperation Strengthened
The Deputy Speaker assured that the National Assembly would reactivate the Nigeria–Cuba Friendship Group to strengthen legislative diplomacy and fast-track bilateral agreements.
He also pledged consideration of Cuba’s invitation for an international colloquium marking the centenary of Fidel Castro.
Cuba Calls for Stronger Friendship Group
The Cuban Ambassador welcomed deeper engagement, calling for a more active parliamentary friendship group and expanded cooperation in agriculture, health, and private sector development.
She also noted ongoing collaborations in vaccine production and chamber-of-commerce partnerships between both countries.
