The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and full disclosure following an interactive session with the Senate Committee on the Commission as part of the National Assembly’s oversight responsibilities.
The Commission said it briefed lawmakers in detail on its financial position, operations, procurement processes, institutional development, strategic partnerships, and ongoing programmes across the South East during the session held on June 9, 2026.
According to a statement on Wednesday signed by the Office of the Managing Director, the Senate Committee requested additional documentation on specific aspects of the Commission’s operations and expenditure.
SEDC said it welcomed the request and asked for time to compile and submit the required materials.
The Committee subsequently adjourned the session, with submission of documents expected on or before June 23, 2026.
SEDC explained that expenditure on its Abuja Liaison Office covers the establishment and operation of a fully furnished facility at the Congress Building, Maitama, Abuja, which serves as its operational base for engagements with the National Assembly, ministries, departments and agencies, and development partners.
It added that the cost reflects cumulative spending since February 11, 2025, covering rent, utilities, operations, and fit-out works.
The Commission also clarified that references to “implied expenditure” relate to a rehabilitation contract for its Enugu headquarters building, which was transferred from the Enugu State Government.
It said the contract followed approval under the Public Procurement Act 2007, with Bureau of Public Procurement clearance and ministerial concurrence, stressing that no funds have been disbursed.
SEDC noted that it has not received capital budget releases but has continued institutional and project development activities. These include payment of staff salaries and arrears, ICT infrastructure deployment, feasibility studies, participation in the Intra-African Trade Fair in Algeria, and engagement with Afreximbank on a Project Preparation Fund for the South East.
It also highlighted the South East Vision 2050 Stakeholder Forum and the South East Venture Capital Programme, which has supported 25 startups.
The Commission said it will submit full documentation, including procurement records and financial details, to the Senate Committee on or before June 23, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability.
