FIFAWC: Germany Hit Seven, Sweden Five in Explosive Start

By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

Germany and Sweden made emphatic statements in their FIFA World Cup opening matches with dominant victories, while Ivory Coast and Japan grabbed crucial results in dramatic Group E and Group F encounters.

In Group E, Germany underlined their title ambitions by thrashing tournament debutants Curaçao 7-1. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring before Curaçao briefly stunned the four-time champions through Livano Comenencia, who netted his country’s historic first World Cup goal. Germany quickly regained control as Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav all found the net, with Havertz completing a brace to cap a ruthless display.

The victory equalled Germany’s famous seven-goal winning margin over Brazil at the 2014 World Cup and placed Julian Nagelsmann’s side firmly in command of the group.

Ivory Coast also opened with a win, edging Ecuador 1-0 thanks to Amad Diallo’s dramatic 90th-minute strike in Philadelphia. After both sides came close on several occasions, the Manchester United winger capitalised on Wilfried Singo’s powerful run to end Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten streak and hand the Elephants a valuable three points.

Meanwhile, Group F produced more excitement as Sweden cruised to a convincing 5-1 victory over Tunisia. Yasin Ayari scored twice, while Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and substitute Mattias Svanberg completed an impressive attacking performance that sent the Swedes to the top of the standings.

Japan, on the other hand, showcased remarkable resilience in a thrilling 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. The Blue Samurai twice came from behind, with Keito Nakamura cancelling out Virgil van Dijk’s opener before Daichi Kamada’s late header rescued a point after Crysencio Summerville had restored the Dutch lead.

After the opening round of fixtures, Germany and Ivory Coast lead Group E on three points apiece, while Sweden top Group F with maximum points ahead of Japan and the Netherlands, who each earned a point in an entertaining start to the tournament.
