The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order after Sowore appeared before the court following a bench warrant earlier issued for his arrest.
The judge directed that Sowore remain in custody until June 24, when the court will hear and determine a motion seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
The application was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court accompanied by supporters carrying placards.
The court had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to him after he failed to appear for proceedings in his ongoing trial.
In the same ruling, Justice Umar granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made defamatory and false claims against President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
The case has continued to attract public attention, with supporters and critics closely monitoring developments ahead of the next court hearing.
