Starmer’s Final Cabinet Meeting Amid Leadership Race

By Oluwakemi Kindness

British Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer convened a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, a day after announcing his resignation as leader of the Labour Party, setting the stage for a potentially swift leadership transition.

Several senior ministers were seen arriving for the meeting, including Darren Jones, who is reportedly considering a leadership bid.

However, political observers believe a challenge from Jones remains unlikely at this stage.

Former defence minister Al Carns has also indicated that he is weighing whether to enter the race. Despite the speculation, neither potential contender is currently seen as having sufficient backing among Labour MPs to mount a serious challenge.

With nominations for the Labour leadership set to open on July 9 and close on July 16, party insiders note that the political landscape could shift significantly in the coming weeks.

Andy Burnham, newly elected as MP for Makerfield, has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer. However, Labour MPs remain divided over whether a contested leadership election is necessary.

If no challenger secures enough support to enter the race, Burnham could be confirmed as Labour leader and become Prime Minister as early as July 17.
