President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the construction of two service carriageways along the Southern Parkway in Abuja, describing the project as a key intervention to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity across major districts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented at the ceremony in Gaduwa District on Tuesday by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the President said the initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and broader efforts to modernise infrastructure in the nation’s capital.
Tinubu noted that the Southern Parkway is a critical transport corridor linking several districts and said the additional service lanes would complement the already completed main carriageway, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, while improving traffic flow and reducing travel time.
He observed that residents of Durumi, Gudu, Gaduwa and neighbouring communities currently experience significant traffic bottlenecks, expressing confidence that the project would provide lasting relief and enhance access across the area.
The President added that the development forms part of ongoing infrastructure investments in the FCT, including roads and interchanges in Jahi, Gwarimpa, Mabushi, Kuje and Gwagwalada. He also commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for accelerating project delivery and reviving previously abandoned works.
Acknowledging that construction activities could temporarily disrupt movement, Tinubu appealed for residents’ cooperation and urged the contractor, CGC Nigeria Limited, to maintain high-quality standards while creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians and artisans.
Speaking at the event, Wike dismissed suggestions that preparations for the 2027 general elections would slow infrastructure development in the FCT, insisting that the administration remains focused on delivering critical projects irrespective of the political calendar.
He disclosed that discussions with the contractor had prioritised speedy execution and expressed optimism that the road would be completed before election-related activities gather momentum in early 2027.
The minister also warned against illegal developments and encroachment along the project corridor, directing relevant authorities to identify and remove structures erected without proper approvals.
Earlier, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, said the contract, awarded in May 2026, covers approximately three kilometres of dual service roads, bridges, drainage systems, culverts and street lighting.
Dauda explained that the infrastructure would strengthen inter-district connectivity and reduce pressure on existing roads serving Durumi, Gudu, Gaduwa and Duboyi districts.
Acting Head of Service of the FCT Administration, Nancy Nathan, added that the project would boost transportation, stimulate economic activity and support the continued expansion of Abuja’s southern development corridor.
