The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to revitalising hockey through improved infrastructure, grassroots development and stronger domestic competitions as part of efforts to restore Nigeria’s status on the African hockey stage.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Nigeria Hockey Super League in Abuja on Saturday, Dikko said the championship reflected the vision of the NSC’s Renewed Hope Initiative to build a sustainable sports economy driven by regular local competitions and talent development.
He commended the Nigeria Hockey Federation for successfully organising the league and creating a platform that showcased the country’s growing pool of hockey talent.
According to him, discussions with officials of the African Hockey Federation and technical experts from Germany confirmed that Nigeria possesses the quality of players needed to compete globally, provided they are supported with modern facilities and structured development programmes.
“We know we have the talent. What we need now is to upgrade our facilities and create the right environment for our athletes to develop and compete anywhere in the world,” Dikko said.
He disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the rehabilitation of sports infrastructure nationwide, including the upgrade of the national hockey pitch, which has been in use since the 2003 All Africa Games.
Dikko said the installation of a new international-standard turf would position Nigeria to bid for and host major African hockey championships while serving as a model for similar facilities across the country.
He added that sports remain a powerful tool for economic growth, youth empowerment, national unity and social inclusion.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, Senator Abdul Ningi, called for equitable investment across all sports federations, stressing that government support should extend beyond football.
He urged the timely release of budgeted funds to enable federations effectively implement their programmes and described sports as a critical tool for youth engagement and crime prevention.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Osifo Emefile also praised the performance of the Nigeria Police teams at the championship, noting that the participation of Police Machine, IGP Flickers and IGP Babes reflected the Force’s commitment to sports development.
He attributed the success to the support of the Inspector-General of Police, whose backing has strengthened the Police’s sports associations and encouraged wider participation among officers.
The championship concluded with Kaduna-based Kada Stars defeating Plateau Tigers 3-2 in a thrilling men’s final to retain their title, while Kada Queens beat Plateau Queens 2-0 to successfully defend the women’s crown.
