Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and secure a place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, keeping alive their dream of successfully defending the title they won in Qatar four years ago.
The defending champions looked to be heading out of the tournament after England took the lead through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. The Three Lions dominated large spells of the encounter and appeared set to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years.
However, Argentina once again demonstrated the resilience that has defined their campaign. Midfielder Enzo Fernández restored parity in the 85th minute, swinging momentum in favour of the South Americans. With extra time looming, Lionel Messi produced another moment of brilliance, delivering a precise cross for Lautaro Martínez to head home the dramatic winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
The victory sends Lionel Scaloni’s side into a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, where they will face Spain on Sunday, July 19. Argentina will be aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup trophy.
For England, the heartbreaking defeat means another painful exit at the semifinal stage despite an impressive tournament. Thomas Tuchel’s men will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff against France on Saturday.
