The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that reports suggesting a new ban by the Government of Kuwait on the recruitment of Nigerian domestic workers are inaccurate.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Ministry state that the reports do not reflect the current situation.
Background on Domestic Worker Recruitment
The Ministry explains that the matter did not arise from a recent ban imposed by the Kuwaiti authorities.
A few years ago, the Embassy of Nigeria in Kuwait City formally requested the suspension of the recruitment and deployment of Nigerian domestic workers and housemaids to Kuwait pending the resolution of concerns regarding: The welfare and protection of Nigerian workers, Their working conditions, The safeguarding of their rights and dignity
The suspension is introduced as a measure to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians seeking employment opportunities abroad.
Continued Diplomatic Engagement
The Ministry notes that Nigeria and Kuwait will continue to engage constructively through established diplomatic channels on labour and migration-related issues.
Relevant authorities from both countries will continue discussions aimed at developing a framework that promotes:
Fair recruitment practices, Adequate legal protection, Decent working conditions for Nigerian workers.
Public Advisory
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges members of the public, media organisations, and stakeholders to verify information through official sources before publication.
This will help prevent the spread of misleading reports that may cause unnecessary concern among Nigerians living in Kuwait and their families in Nigeria.
