Nigeria’s U-18 girls’ hockey team began their campaign at the 2026 U-18 Africa Hockey 5s Championship in emphatic fashion, defeating South Africa 7-4 in their opening match on Thursday in Nairobi, Kenya.
The young Nigerian side produced an outstanding attacking display, combining pace, precision and teamwork to outclass one of the tournament’s pre-championship favourites.
From the first whistle, Nigeria dictated the tempo with quick passing, clinical finishing and disciplined defending to establish control of the contest.
Although South Africa fought back with four goals, they struggled to contain Nigeria’s relentless attacking pressure as the West Africans maintained their intensity to secure a convincing victory and all three points.
The impressive win gives Nigeria a strong start in the race for continental honours and qualification opportunities on offer at the championship.
It also highlights the steady growth of youth hockey in the country, with the players displaying confidence, resilience and tactical discipline on the continental stage.
Buoyed by the opening-day triumph, the Nigerian girls will look to sustain their winning momentum as they continue their quest for the Africa Hockey 5s title in Nairobi
