NCDC Tightens Ebola Screening for High-Risk Travellers

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has stepped up screening measures for travellers arriving from countries affected by Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The agency said some travellers from countries with active or relevant Ebola transmission may be required to complete health declaration forms on arrival in Nigeria.

The NCDC announced the measure in an interim public health advisory issued Tuesday, as an Ebola outbreak continues in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the agency, the decision followed a review of the changing disease situation and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

However, travellers arriving from other countries are not currently required to complete the health declaration form.

The NCDC urged members of the public to remain alert for symptoms associated with Ebola and seek medical attention promptly if they develop.

It also advised travellers and members of the public to provide relevant travel or exposure information when seeking medical care.

The agency said Nigeria remains on high alert, with preparedness and surveillance activities ongoing.

It added that the measures would be reviewed as the Ebola situation changes and new public health risk assessments become available.
