Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele says Nigeria’s cash transfer programme has reached more than 10 million households.
Oyedele disclosed this on Wednesday at the Africa’s Golden Future Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, while highlighting measures to protect vulnerable Nigerians from the effects of economic reforms.
He said more than 1.5 million students have also benefited from education support under the government’s intervention programmes.
The minister in a statement by Efe Ovuakporie, Head of Media, says effective social protection was essential to ensuring that citizens benefited from economic reforms.
Oyedele identified fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation and tax reform as key components of Nigeria’s economic reform programme.
He stressed that governments must carefully sequence reforms, communicate policy decisions clearly and build public trust to sustain their impact.
He also called on African countries to remove trade barriers, improve infrastructure and strengthen regional integration to boost trade and investment.
Oyedele said Nigeria was developing an economic policy framework to improve coordination among trade, fiscal and monetary policies.
He added that investments in energy, logistics, storage and processing infrastructure would help African countries improve competitiveness and benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area.
