The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for urgent intervention by the National and Abia State Emergency Management Agencies following flooding that reportedly killed two people and submerged homes in parts of Bende Local Government Area.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, also called for immediate relief materials and other support for residents affected by the disaster.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the flooding followed two days of torrential rainfall that affected Ugwueke, Amaokai, Amaeze and Ezeukwu communities.

The statement said several homes were submerged, including the palaces of two traditional rulers, Eze Ifeanyi Owo of Amaeze and Eze Gilbert Chukwu of Amaokai.

Kalu described the incident as tragic and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and other affected residents.

He urged NEMA, SEMA and other relevant agencies to respond urgently with relief materials and assistance to help cushion the impact of the flooding.

The Deputy Speaker also said he would continue engaging relevant federal agencies on the ecological challenges facing Bende and efforts to prevent further disasters.

According to the statement, the constituency has faced persistent ecological problems, with Uzuakoli Electoral Ward described as one of the worst-hit areas, where previous incidents have reportedly resulted in loss of lives and destruction of buildings.

Kalu also prayed for the repose of those who died and the quick recovery of residents affected by the disaster.
