Six Nigerians who had been detained in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes have regained their freedom following sustained diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms the development in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, revealing that four of the detainees were released on June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom on June 23.
According to the ministry, the successful outcome was the result of consistent diplomatic and consular engagement by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan with the Ivorian authorities.
The ministry commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy officials for maintaining regular consular access to the detained citizens, ensuring their welfare throughout the period of detention, and engaging with the Ivorian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, as well as other relevant institutions.
It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, noting that the strong bilateral relationship between both countries contributed significantly to the resolution of the matter.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, the ministry said the Federal Government would continue to safeguard the rights, welfare and dignity of its citizens through proactive diplomatic engagement and consular support.
The ministry further urged Nigerians travelling or residing overseas to respect the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission whenever necessary.
