The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced an induction programme in Abuja for newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners-designate ahead of their diplomatic postings.

According to spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the training is designed to strengthen their understanding of Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, consular duties, and mission administration.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, congratulated the appointees, saying their selection reflects President Bola Tinubu’s confidence in them.

“Your appointment is a reflection of the trust and confidence of Mr President in your capacity to represent Nigeria effectively on the global stage,” she said.

She described the envoys as “the face, voice, and strategic agents of Nigeria abroad,” urging them to advance economic diplomacy, attract investment, and promote trade and tourism in line with the 4Ds foreign policy framework.

On consular duties, she stressed improved service delivery to Nigerians abroad.
“Nigerians in the diaspora must feel the presence, protection, and responsiveness of their government at all times,” she added.

She also warned against misconduct, stating:
“Diplomatic privilege must never be mistaken for a licence for misconduct.”

Delivering the keynote address, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, described their appointments as a “sacred national responsibility,” urging professionalism, patriotism, and strict adherence to host country laws.

He said Nigeria’s foreign policy is now centred on citizens’ welfare and national development outcomes.

Representatives of the National Assembly pledged support through oversight and improved funding for foreign missions, while urging accountability and financial discipline.

The induction continues with technical sessions on diplomacy, mission management, protocol, consular affairs, economic diplomacy, and diaspora engagement, as the Ministry seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign service delivery.
