Nigeria’s governors have reaffirmed their support for key national reforms, including the establishment of state police, the National Solar Super-Grid Initiative, and agricultural development programmes aimed at improving security, boosting food production, and enhancing citizens’ welfare.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, disclosed this on Thursday while presenting the communiqué issued after the https://nggovernorsforum.org/ (NGF) second meeting of 2026 in Abuja.
The communiqué, signed by the NGF Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, stated that the proposed reforms are critical to addressing the country’s security challenges and driving sustainable economic growth.
The governors reviewed ongoing efforts to establish state police and held consultations with state Attorneys-General on the proposed constitutional amendments and operational framework for the initiative.
According to the communiqué, the governors stressed that the creation of state police must be constitutionally sound and consistent with the principles of federalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“The Forum received a presentation from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of the Attorneys-General of the States on efforts to support the establishment of State Police in Nigeria,” Abiodun said.
The Forum also received updates on the National Nutrition 774 Initiative and the proposed National Nutrition Bill, with governors reiterating their commitment to reducing child malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes nationwide.
In addition, the governors were briefed by the World Bank on its proposed Country Partnership Framework for Nigeria for FY2026–2032 and the Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth Programme.
The initiative is expected to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen value chains, encourage private-sector participation, enhance food security, and support early childhood development.
The governors endorsed continued collaboration with the Federal Government, the World Bank, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the programme across participating states.
They also approved state-specific interventions and called for stronger coordination across sectors, including health, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, social protection, and family support services.
The Forum further considered the National Solar Super-Grid Initiative, which is designed to expand electricity access through decentralised solar generation integrated with the national grid.
According to the governors, the initiative has the potential to strengthen energy security, support industrialisation, improve state electricity markets, and accelerate economic growth nationwide.
The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to power sector reforms and closer collaboration with the Federal Government and development partners to improve infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities across Nigeria.
