The House of Representatives has joined Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day 2026, marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in the country.
In a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi (MNIPR), the House says the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and renew commitment to nation building, inclusion, and institutional strengthening.
It noted that 27 years of continuous democratic rule remains a significant milestone, reflecting the resilience of national institutions and the enduring faith of Nigerians in democratic governance, dialogue, and the rule of law.
The House paid tribute to pro-democracy heroes whose sacrifices, courage, and patriotism helped secure the freedoms enjoyed today, stressing that democracy must continue to be protected and strengthened.
As the institution closest to the people, the House of Representatives said it remains committed to deepening democracy through responsive legislation, effective oversight, and stronger citizen engagement.
It highlighted recent legislative efforts, including the passage of comprehensive electoral reforms signed into law in February 2026, as part of ongoing measures to strengthen institutions and expand democratic participation.
With Nigeria preparing for its eighth consecutive general elections since the return to civilian rule, the House called on citizens to actively and peacefully participate in the democratic process.
It stressed that strong democratic institutions and an engaged citizenry remain the foundation of national stability and development.
The House further noted that democracy is sustained not only through elections, but also through accountability, civic responsibility, and respect for democratic values between electoral cycles.
Reaffirming its commitment, the House said it will continue to protect democratic institutions, advance the public interest, and ensure that the voices of Nigerians are reflected in governance.
It wished Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration.
