IGP Disu Assures Safe Return of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State will be rescued unharmed, expressing confidence in ongoing security operations to secure their release.

The assurance comes amid growing public concern over the fate of the pupils, with the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) describing the pledge as a reflection of the Nigeria Police Force’s increasing operational capacity and intelligence-driven approach to tackling crime.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Festus Fifen, and Secretary, Peter Ireh, the association said the Inspector-General’s confidence had renewed hope for the families of the victims and reassured Nigerians that security agencies remain committed to bringing the children home safely.

CCAN noted that under Disu’s leadership, the police have intensified efforts against kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes, leading to the arrest of hundreds of suspects and the rescue of at least 277 kidnap victims nationwide.

The association cited the recent rescue of Olaide Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons in Ibadan as evidence of the effectiveness of the Force’s intelligence-led policing strategy, expressing optimism that the abducted Oyo schoolchildren would also be safely reunited with their families.

CCAN also applauded ongoing reforms within the police, saying the current leadership has strengthened professionalism and improved public confidence in law enforcement.

The association further commended efforts to improve police-community relations, noting what it described as a reduction in arbitrary arrests, improved response to distress calls and more transparent communication channels.

While urging the Inspector-General to sustain ongoing reforms and intensify the fight against criminality, CCAN pledged its support for efforts aimed at building a more professional, accountable and people-oriented police institution.

The association expressed confidence that the achievements recorded so far under Disu’s leadership represent the foundation for broader reforms capable of strengthening security and restoring public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
