The collapse of a building in Ilorin, Kwara State, has highlighted the risks faced by residents living in dilapidated and potentially unsafe structures.
The building at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, Ilorin West Local Government Area, collapsed, killing several people and injuring others who have been taken to hospital.
In a condolence message issued in Abuja, by Mohammad Abdulkadri, the Media Adviser to Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, calls on Kwara State Government and relevant local authorities to treat the incident as a warning and take preventive action.
He also urged the authorities to conduct an inventory of dilapidated mud houses and other structures that may endanger residents.
According to him, the exercise should help the authorities introduce appropriate safety measures and interventions for people living in vulnerable buildings.
Prof. Sulaiman also advised residents who occupy visibly deteriorating houses to prioritise their safety and consider moving to safer accommodation where possible.
He expressed concern over the loss of lives and prayed for the souls of those who died, while wishing those injured a quick recovery.
