The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren, teachers and other victims of kidnapping across the country.
Adegbite made the appeal while condemning the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as a disturbing reflection of the security challenges confronting the nation.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday and signed by the Commission’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Celestine Toruka, the cleric urged security agencies, particularly the military, to sustain operations until all victims are safely rescued and reunited with their families.
He described the actions of kidnappers as cowardly and unacceptable, stressing the need for stronger measures to protect schools and vulnerable communities from criminal attacks.
While expressing concern over insecurity, Adegbite congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999.
According to him, the country’s democratic journey remains a significant achievement, noting that democracy provides a framework for the rule of law, protection of fundamental rights and the separation of powers.
“Twenty-seven years of unbroken democratic experience in Nigeria is no mean achievement.
“Democracy remains indisputably the best form of government because its principles are anchored on the rule of law, fundamental human rights, and the separation of powers,” he said.
The NCPC boss stated that Nigeria has gained greater recognition and respect in the international community under democratic governance and urged leaders to remain committed to the principles that sustain democracy.
He called on President Tinubu to continue implementing policies that deliver tangible benefits to citizens while preserving democratic values and institutions.
Adegbite also appealed to the President to honour individuals who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for democracy and ensure adequate support for their families.
Commending the President’s leadership despite prevailing national challenges, he encouraged the administration to remain focused on initiatives that promote peace, security and national development.
The cleric further urged Nigerians to pray for the country’s leaders and support efforts toward peaceful, credible and transparent elections in 2027.
Expressing confidence in Nigeria’s future, Adegbite called for unity, resilience and hope, stressing that the nation can overcome its challenges through collective commitment to peace, security and democratic governance.
