The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it may restore fuel subsidy to reduce petrol prices if elected into power in the 2027 general election.
The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, disclosed this on Thursday during an interview on national television, saying the party would explore all available options to lower energy costs and ease the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Kwankwaso said the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and its leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, were committed to considering measures that would make petrol more affordable.
He attributed the high cost of fuel partly to corruption in the oil industry, noting that many Nigerians were still struggling with the economic consequences of subsidy removal.
President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, a policy that triggered a sharp increase in fuel prices and intensified the rising cost of living.
Kwankwaso said an NDC government would prioritise reducing petrol prices and improving living conditions if the party wins the 2027 presidential election.
