The Nigerian Education Loan Fund NELFUND, has clarified that student loans are voluntary, urging tertiary institution students to apply only when they need financial assistance.
The fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
NELFUND said the scheme aims to remove financial barriers to higher education and ensure that eligible students are not denied access to education because of financial difficulties.
It stressed that students who can afford their educational expenses are under no obligation to apply, describing the facility as a support mechanism rather than a compulsory requirement.
The fund added that although the loans are interest-free, beneficiaries must repay them in line with the Student Loans Act. It advised applicants to understand the terms and conditions before accessing the facility.
