Nigeria has strongly condemned the killing of Mali’s Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Lieutenant General Sadio Camara, following terrorist attacks that occurred on 25 April 2025, describing the incident as a grave tragedy and a stark reminder of the growing threat of insecurity in the Sahel region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Federal Government extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Malian Armed Forces, and the government and people of Mali.
The statement noted that the loss of Lieutenant General Sadio Camara comes at a critical moment in Mali’s history, stressing that such a development underscores the fragility of peace in regions affected by persistent terrorist activity.
Nigeria also expressed solidarity with Mali, reaffirming the long-standing bonds of brotherhood, shared destiny, and resilience that unite African nations in the face of common challenges.
The Federal Government further condemned the recent wave of coordinated terrorist attacks across several parts of Mali, which have resulted in loss of lives and widespread destruction of property. It described the attacks as “cowardly acts” that threaten national stability and undermine core values of peace, dignity, and coexistence.
Reiterating its position, Nigeria emphasized that terrorism in all its forms remains a common enemy requiring unified regional and international cooperation. It called for a strengthened collective response anchored on mutual support, shared humanity, and sustained collaboration.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Mali in safeguarding its sovereignty, preserving its territorial integrity, and restoring lasting peace and security. It pledged continued partnership with Mali and other international stakeholders to intensify the fight against terrorism across the Sahel and the wider West African sub-region.
At a moment of national mourning, the Federal Government renewed its appeal for stronger global solidarity, stressing that the security and peace of one nation are inseparable from that of others.
