The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) have partnered to leverage sports as a tool for tourism promotion, investment attraction, and regional cooperation ahead of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).

The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja as preparations gather pace for the continental golf championship scheduled for November 2 to 7, 2026, followed by the Nigerian Open from November 7 to 10.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, LGAN President and Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Lami Ahmed, described the agreement as a major step toward delivering a successful tournament that will showcase Nigeria’s potential beyond sports.

She said the championship is expected to attract participants from more than 30 African countries and provide a platform to promote Nigeria as a destination for tourism, business, and international engagement.

According to Ahmed, the event offers an opportunity to reshape perceptions about Nigeria and highlight the country’s strengths on the continental stage.

“Countries have already begun registering and they are excited about coming to Nigeria. We want this event to become more than a tournament. We want it to tell a positive story about our country and create lasting opportunities in tourism, business, and international cooperation,” she said.

Ahmed also disclosed plans to establish a Sports-to-Business Investment Pavilion during the tournament to facilitate networking, investment discussions, and economic partnerships among participants and stakeholders.

She noted that a successful hosting of the championship would strengthen Nigeria’s reputation as a destination for major sporting events and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

The Director-General of NILDS said the institute’s support aligns with its mandate to promote national development, institutional collaboration, and regional integration.
He described sports as a powerful instrument for diplomacy, economic growth, gender inclusion, and international cooperation.

“Sports today goes beyond recreation. It is a tool for nation-building, economic development, and international relations. What we are doing through this partnership is supporting an initiative that promotes cooperation among African countries while showcasing Nigeria’s leadership role on the continent,” he said.

According to him, NILDS will provide policy support, stakeholder engagement, legislative access, and strategic advocacy to ensure the success of the championship.

He added that the collaboration reflects growing recognition of sports as a catalyst for economic development and a platform for strengthening relationships across Africa.

The All Africa Challenge Trophy, one of Africa’s premier amateur women’s golf championships, is expected to attract golfers, officials, investors, tourism operators, and business leaders from across the continent.

Organisers say the event will not only promote sports development but also advance discussions on investment, tourism, trade, and regional cooperation
