The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations on October 1.
The FCT Command said the deployment is aimed at strengthening security, maintaining law and order, and protecting lives and property before, during and after the celebrations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FCT NSCDC spokesperson, DSC Monica Ojobi, says the deployment was ordered by the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu.
Personnel from specialised units, including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, CBRNE Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit, are taking part in the operation.
The command said its personnel would cover strategic and vulnerable locations across the FCT, including shopping malls, markets, motor parks, amusement and recreational centres, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure.
It also activated undercover operatives for surveillance and intelligence gathering, particularly around locations identified as potential hideouts for criminals.
The command said uncompleted buildings and other identified black spots across the FCT would also be monitored to prevent criminal activities and security breaches.
Odumosu directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to maintain a strong operational presence in their respective Area Councils.
He also urged personnel to remain vigilant throughout the celebration period.
