Ogun Assembly Clears Ex-Speaker of Embezzlement Allegation

The Ogun State House of Assembly has cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of an embezzlement allegation linked to his removal from office in 2024.
The Assembly also converted Oluomo’s impeachment to a resignation during Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The decision followed the adoption of a report presented by Deputy Speaker Lateefat Ajayi on behalf of the Committee of the Whole House.
Ajayi moved the motion for the report’s adoption, while Yusuf Amosun seconded it.
Lawmakers approved it through a unanimous voice vote.
The House said the embezzlement allegation was never included in the notice that removed Oluomo as Speaker.
It also said available evidence did not support the allegation.
Lawmakers considered Oluomo’s petition, submitted on March 31, in which he sought either evidence to support the allegation or his exoneration under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.
After reviewing the evidence before it, the Assembly withdrew the embezzlement allegation.
The House resolved that the allegation would no longer form part of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.
Lawmakers also overturned his impeachment and formally commuted it to a resignation.
The Assembly said the decision was taken to promote unity, harmony and camaraderie among members.
