The House of Representatives has called for an intensified and coordinated security operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies to secure the immediate rescue of victims abducted during an attack in Ekiti State.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to bolster security across Ekiti and other vulnerable communities through enhanced intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms aimed at curbing the growing threat of attacks and kidnappings.
The resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Kolawole Akinlayo.
Presenting the motion, Akinlayo drew the attention of the House to the reported attack on April 28, 2026, in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, where suspected armed assailants allegedly stormed a church during an open-air crusade and abducted worshippers.
He expressed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the state, noting that such attacks continue to instill fear among residents, disrupt social and economic activities, and undermine public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
In response, the House urged security agencies to strengthen collaboration and deploy all necessary resources to ensure the safe and timely rescue of the victims while bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The lawmakers further directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant government bodies to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and support to affected families and communities.
To address the broader security concerns, the House mandated its Committees on National Security and Intelligence, Police Affairs, and Army to engage with relevant security agencies, investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, and recommend practical measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The resolution underscores growing concerns within the National Assembly over rising incidents of insecurity and the need for a more proactive and coordinated response to protect lives and property across the country.
