Shari’ah Council Disowns ‘Prayer Against INEC Chair’ Claim

By Sofiat Adenekan-Abdul

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has dismissed reports alleging it directed Muslims to embark on prayers for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement issued Monday in Kaduna, the council’s Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba-Ahmad, said the organisation had received several enquiries regarding what he termed “misleading and unsubstantiated reports” circulating on social media.

He stressed that the council never issued any directive urging Muslims to pray for the removal of the INEC chairman.

“The Council categorically dissociates itself from these claims. At no time did it issue any directive or call on Muslims to embark on such prayers,” the statement read.

Baba-Ahmad further warned that the reports appear to be a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and drag the council into political controversies.

“These fabrications are intended to create unnecessary tension and draw the Council into divisive political matters,” he said.

Reaffirming its non-partisan stance, the council noted its continued commitment to promoting justice, equity, moral values, and peaceful coexistence.
It also cautioned the public against relying on unverified social media content, urging both the Muslim community and the media to depend only on official communication channels.

The clarification comes amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation across digital platforms.
