President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing pressing family considerations.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President received Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier in the day and commended him for decades of “distinguished service” to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

Tinubu praised the former police chief’s dedication and his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023, was midway into a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu

Following his departure, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity would provide “steady and focused direction” for the police during what he described as a critical security period for the country.

The statement added that the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council in line with the Police Act 2020 to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security, strengthening police capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and equipped to carry out its constitutional mandate.
