President Bola Tinubu has called on member states of the United Nations (UN) to incorporate the Preamble to the UN Charter into their national constitutions to strengthen global commitments to peace, justice, human dignity and international cooperation.
The President’s message was delivered by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, during an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly at the organisation’s headquarters in New York.
According to a statement from Ibrahim’s media office, the meeting was held ahead of President Tinubu’s participation in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in September.
Tinubu said embedding the UN Charter’s preamble in national constitutions would serve as a lasting reminder of the shared responsibility of nations to uphold the organisation’s founding principles.
According to the President, the proposal would reinforce commitments to international peace and security, the protection of human rights, justice, the rule of law, social progress and peaceful coexistence among nations.
Speaking on Tinubu’s behalf, Ibrahim said the initiative is intended to strengthen the resolve of member states to uphold the values of the UN Charter and place them at the centre of national governance.
The envoy also welcomed the continued commitment of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia—to the principles of the UN Charter.
He disclosed that delegates at the informal General Assembly meeting applauded the proposal, describing it as an initiative that promotes global solidarity and reinforces the founding ideals of the United Nations.
According to Ibrahim, the proposal reflects Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and its support for a stronger, more inclusive and effective United Nations committed to peace, sustainable development and shared prosperity.
