Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been admitted to an intensive care unit in Kampala after collapsing during his treason trial.
His wife, Winnie Byanyima, said the 70-year-old was unconscious and unresponsive after falling ill in court.
Besigye reportedly collapsed while objecting to the appointment of state lawyers to represent him. Prison guards later rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The veteran opposition figure has been in detention since November 2024 after being taken from Kenya back to Uganda.
He and his aide, Obeid Lutale, are facing treason charges over allegations that they plotted to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government. Both men deny the accusations.
Besigye has contested Uganda’s presidency against Museveni four times. His wife has called for him to receive treatment from his personal doctor at a private medical facility.
