US Congressman John James has urged the Nigerian government to release the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, or face possible cuts to US financial assistance.
James, who represents Michigan in the US House of Representatives, made the call during plenary on Thursday while seeking support for H.Res. 1321, a resolution he introduced on May 22.
The resolution asks Nigeria to ensure all legal proceedings involving Kanu comply with the country’s constitution and international human rights obligations.
The lawmaker also called for a fresh trial for Kanu that guarantees access to legal counsel, medical care and humane detention conditions in line with international standards.
James alleged that Kanu’s prosecution reflects a broader pattern of persecution against Christians in Nigeria. He further claimed that the Nigerian government has failed to adequately address attacks by extremist groups.
He urged US lawmakers to support the resolution, saying Nigeria should either conduct a constitutionally compliant retrial or release Kanu unconditionally.
James also warned that the United States should reconsider its financial assistance to Nigeria if Kanu remains in detention.
In response, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful welcomed the congressman’s remarks, describing them as a significant boost to the group’s campaign for Kanu’s release.
Kanu is serving a life sentence after his conviction on terrorism charges in November 2025. He remains in custody at Sokoto prison while pursuing an appeal.
