Top rugby clubs and state-backed teams are set to converge in Lagos on May 2 for the 2026 Atlantic Rugby Sevens, as defending champions and emerging sides compete for honours in one of Nigeria’s premier rugby competitions.
The tournament will take place at Rugby School Nigeria in Eko Atlantic and will feature leading men’s teams, including Cowrie RFC (Lagos), Barewa RFC (Kano), Racing RFC (Lagos), and Nigeria Police RFC.
In the women’s category, Nigeria Police RFC, Delta State Women’s Team, and Edo Women’s RFC will contest, reflecting the steady growth of women’s rugby in Nigeria.
Organised by the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, the competition is designed to strengthen player development while promoting the fast-paced sevens format across the country.
The event will also enjoy international attention with the expected presence of French international and 2024 Olympic gold medallist Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang. The Pau winger/fullback’s participation is expected to raise the tournament’s profile and provide local players with exposure to elite-level rugby experience.
The Atlantic Rugby Sevens has become a key fixture on Nigeria’s sporting calendar, driven by rising participation, improved organisation, and growing ambitions to position the country as a competitive force in global rugby.
With a strong lineup of teams, international interest, and heightened competition, the 2026 edition promises high-intensity action and further growth for rugby development in Nigeria.
