Former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has urged Nigerians to support continuity in the 2027 general elections, saying the country must sustain the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District, made the call in an Independence Day message marking Nigeria’s 66th anniversary on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
He said the forthcoming 2027 elections would be a defining moment for the country’s future, urging Nigerians to use their votes to protect what he described as gains recorded under the Tinubu administration.
According to him, Nigeria has taken difficult steps to address longstanding economic challenges in recent years, adding that the country is now moving from reform towards prosperity.
“We chose to confront our problems rather than continue avoiding them. We chose treatment over painkillers,” Lawan said.
He listed economic recovery, rebuilt foreign reserves, a significant reduction in oil theft and record growth in non-oil exports among the developments he described as evidence of progress.
Lawan said, “At this critical moment, what we need is continuity, not reversal. We need to keep working with President Bola Tinubu to turn the foundations we have laid into prosperity that every family can feel.”
He further said the All Progressives Congress (APC) should be allowed to continue its programmes, arguing that the 2027 election would determine whether Nigerians remain on what he described as the right path.
The former Senate President also called on Nigerians to reject any attempt to return the country to the past, while stressing the importance of national unity and peaceful political participation.
“Our diversity is our strength. Our unity is our foundation,” he said.
Lawan urged citizens to remain engaged in the affairs of the country and contribute to building a better Nigeria.
He wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary, saying the country’s progress would require collective effort.
