NDLEA Urges Youths to Embrace Skills Over Drugs

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), has urged Nigerian youths to embrace skills acquisition programmes as protection against drug abuse and crime.

Marwa spoke in Abuja at the launch of a youth empowerment initiative by Grassroots Bridge Builders, a non-governmental organisation.

He said training young people in practical skills directly tackles unemployment, poverty and substance abuse, describing the programme targeting 10,000 youths as a strong support to national development.

NDLEA calls on Nigerian youths to invest in skills and empowerment programmes as a safeguard against drug abuse and social vices.

“This is not charity; it is capacity building and future protection. It keeps young people away from drugs and social vices,” Marwa said.

The NDLEA boss stressed that government cannot fight drug abuse alone and called on NGOs, community groups, faith-based bodies and the private sector to support youth-focused programmes.

“Prevention works best when communities and government collaborate. Fighting drug abuse is everyone’s responsibility,” he added.

Addressing the youths, Marwa encouraged them to see themselves as nation builders.

“You are not a problem to be managed; you are a solution to be empowered. Use these opportunities, stay away from drugs, and invest in your future,” he said.

He commended Grassroots Bridge Builders, noting that youth empowerment remains one of the most sustainable ways to secure Nigeria’s future.
