The Dallas Mavericks have officially appointed Masai Ujiri as Team President and Alternate Governor, in a bold move aimed at strengthening the franchise’s long-term championship ambitions.
Ujiri, one of the most respected executives in the National Basketball Association, will take charge of all basketball operations, including roster construction, player personnel decisions, scouting, and overall strategic direction of the team.
Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont described the appointment as a “critical step” in the organisation’s pursuit of sustained success, praising Ujiri’s proven leadership and winning pedigree.
Ujiri arrives in Dallas with an impressive résumé, most notably guiding the Toronto Raptors to their first-ever NBA championship in 2019 during his tenure as President of Basketball Operations. Renowned for his sharp talent evaluation and disciplined roster building, he has earned a reputation as one of the league’s elite front-office minds.
Beyond his NBA achievements, Ujiri is also the founder of Giants of Africa, a nonprofit dedicated to youth empowerment through basketball and education across the African continent. His influence was further recognised in 2025 when he was named a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.
Speaking on his new role, Ujiri expressed excitement about the challenge ahead, stating his commitment to building a competitive, high-performing team in Dallas.
The appointment signals a new era for the Mavericks, as the franchise looks to combine strong leadership, strategic vision, and elite basketball operations under Ujiri’s guidance.
