The House of Representatives has called for strict enforcement of regulations governing the citing of gas filling stations and outlets following a gas explosion in Apapa, Lagos, which left five people injured.
The motion on Wednesday, raised by Rep. Adesola Samuel-Adedayo under matters of urgent national importance, drew attention to the explosion that occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2026, along Adeleye Street in Apapa Federal Constituency.
Lawmakers noted with concern that the explosion happened at a construction site located behind two shops, causing extensive damage to nearby buildings and resulting in significant financial losses.
Among those injured was a student reportedly on his way to school at the time of the incident.
The House commended the swift intervention of residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who responded promptly to the emergency and facilitated the evacuation of victims to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.
However, the lawmakers expressed concern over the recurring cases of gas explosions in densely populated and low-income areas, warning of the continued threat to lives and property.
Following deliberations, the House resolved to mandate relevant regulatory agencies to strictly enforce guidelines on the location and operation of gas filling stations across the country.
It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to urgently provide relief materials and support to victims affected by the explosion.
