Kwara, UNICEF Deliver Relief Materials to IDPs in Edu Camp

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has intensified humanitarian support for vulnerable populations with the distribution of relief materials to internally displaced persons in Yikpata Camp, Edu Local Government Area.

The intervention, facilitated through the Kwara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), delivered essential Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) materials alongside other critical relief supplies aimed at improving living conditions in the camp.

According to a statement issued by RUWASSA’s Press Secretary, Afolabi Temple, the materials were officially handed over to the Camp Commandant, Captain Umar Adamu, for proper and transparent distribution to beneficiaries.

Speaking during the presentation, RUWASSA’s General Manager, Olorunfemi Oladipo—represented by the Head of Department, Sanitation and Hygiene, Abdulazeez Rufai—commended both the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for their swift and consistent humanitarian response to displaced communities.

He noted that the intervention reflects a strong and growing partnership focused on addressing urgent humanitarian needs while promoting dignity, hygiene, and public health among affected populations.

“We sincerely appreciate the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for this timely support,” he said. “This intervention will significantly improve sanitation conditions and bring relief to families currently facing difficult circumstances.”
Oladipo further assured that RUWASSA will continue to strengthen hygiene awareness campaigns within the camp to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure a safe living environment for residents.

Receiving the items, Camp Commandant Captain Umar Adamu expressed gratitude to both the state government and UNICEF, describing the gesture as timely and impactful. He assured that all relief materials would be distributed fairly and efficiently to all displaced persons in the camp.

The Yikpata IDP camp currently hosts over 1,000 displaced persons—including about 800 children, 500 women, and 165 men—who continue to benefit from ongoing humanitarian interventions by the Kwara State Government and its development partners.

This latest intervention reinforces the commitment of the state government and UNICEF to improving humanitarian response systems and restoring hope to communities affected by insecurity.
