The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) has officially unveiled the franchise squads, captains, and coaching teams for the inaugural Nigeria Super League (NSL), scheduled to run from May 16 to May 31, 2026, in what is being described as a landmark moment for cricket development in the country.
Organised under the Nigeria Super League LOC, the new franchise competition is designed as a high-performance domestic platform aimed at accelerating the growth of Nigerian cricket, bridging the gap between grassroots development and international exposure.
NCF President, Mr. Uyi Akpata, described the league as a transformative step for the sport in Nigeria, stressing its role in talent discovery and elite player development.
“The Nigeria Super League is more than a tournament. It is a structured platform to inspire the next generation, sharpen elite talent, and position Nigerian cricket for greater success on the global stage,” Akpata said.
Six franchises—Central Eagles, Eastern Elephants, Middle-Belt Tigers, Northern Lions, Southern Sharks, and Western Dolphins—will compete in the maiden edition, each boasting a blend of experienced players, emerging talents, and seasoned coaching crews.
The squads feature some of Nigeria’s most recognised cricket names, with captains such as Peter Aho, Taiwo Mohammed, Sylvester Okpe, Isaac Okpe, and Vincent Adewoye expected to lead their respective teams into a highly competitive debut season.
The league, themed “One Dream. One League. Endless Opportunities.”, is expected to redefine domestic cricket in Nigeria by introducing a structured franchise system that enhances competitiveness, professionalism, and fan engagement.
Beyond the on-field battles, the NSL is also focused on long-term development objectives, including strengthening player pathways, improving technical standards, and identifying future national team stars.
The tournament will begin on May 16, 2026, featuring morning and afternoon matches in a round-robin format. Group-stage fixtures will run until May 27, before the competition advances into the knockout rounds, culminating in the Grand Final on May 30, 2026.
All matches will be staged at the TBS Cricket Oval and broadcast live on the NCF YouTube Channel, offering fans across the country front-row access to Nigeria’s rising cricket talent.
With excitement building ahead of the first ball, the Nigeria Super League is poised to usher in a new era for the sport, blending competition, entertainment, and opportunity on an unprecedented scale.
