The 2026 National Open Trials of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) have ended in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the federation declaring the event a major success in discovering fresh talents ahead of upcoming international championships.
President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Tayo Popoola, said the three-day competition showcased the bright future of Nigerian Taekwondo, as athletes displayed impressive performances capable of forming the backbone of the national team.
Speaking at the close of the trials, the Grand Master expressed confidence that the new generation of athletes would help Nigeria achieve podium finishes at major global events, including the African Games and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
According to her, the federation intentionally designed the trials to identify and nurture young talents who can develop into world-class competitors within the next few years.
“The display of talents here at this National Open Trials has wowed me and I am elated to say that our future is bright,” she said, adding that the athletes discovered during the event would strengthen Nigeria’s representation at international championships.
Popoola also referenced earlier remarks by Grand Master Kim Lee on Nigeria’s growing potential in global Taekwondo, noting that the federation’s development programmes are already yielding positive results.
She praised the support of the National Sports Commission and commended its Director General, Bukola Olopade, for attending the trials in person to encourage athletes and stakeholders.
The NTF President further highlighted the successful conduct of the Kukkiwon Dan Grading exercise, describing it as a major milestone for Nigerian athletes seeking international participation.
She maintained that the backing from the National Sports Commission has placed the federation on the right path toward achieving international success.
Looking ahead, Popoola revealed that preparations have been completed for Nigeria’s participation at the forthcoming African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali, scheduled for May 29 to June 2, 2026.
She disclosed that athletes selected from the Abeokuta trials, including Para athletes, would represent Nigeria in both Poomsae and Kyorugi events.
“This is our first time going with a large number of athletes and we are grateful to the National Sports Commission, which shows that we are on the right track,” she said.
More than 300 athletes participated in the National Open Trials held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.
