Nigeria has officially departed for the 2026 African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships in Algeria, with the nation targeting another dominant outing at the continental tournament scheduled for May 18 to 25 in Oran.

The Nigerian contingent comprises 13 athletes — 10 female and three male para-powerlifters — who will compete against some of Africa’s finest athletes at one of the continent’s biggest para-powerlifting events this year.

Among the athletes representing Team Nigeria are Ajiboye Rukayat, Ani Chiamaka, Anigbogu Franka, Dauda Ibrahim, Ezuruike Roland, Ferdinard Rita, Ganiyu Anifat, Idris Riluwan Sabo, Mark Onyinyechi Gift, Nworgu Esther, Ogundolie Tolulope, Oluwafemiayo Folashade and Oyema Esther.

The championship is expected to attract participants from 23 countries including Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana and Angola, setting the stage for a highly competitive showdown in Oran.

Nigeria heads into the competition with high expectations following its impressive pedigree in para-powerlifting at both continental and global levels.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, charged the athletes to compete fiercely for medals while proudly upholding Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading forces in para sports.

The African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships will officially run from May 21 to 24, with athletes battling across different weight categories in pursuit of continental glory.
