2027: Ugochinyere Warns Against Deregistration of Political Parties

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The member of the House of Representatives representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Imo-Ugochinyere, has warned against actions that could undermine opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a news conference in Abuja on Monday, the federal lawmaker expressed concern over ongoing legal and political developments involving some opposition parties, stressing the need to protect democratic participation and political stability.

Ugochinyere cautioned against moves capable of weakening political parties ahead of future elections, arguing that all electoral and party-related processes must strictly comply with constitutional provisions and democratic principles.

According to him, political parties that have won elective positions remain relevant stakeholders in the democratic process and should be treated in line with the provisions of the law.

Commends Appeal Court Intervention

The lawmaker, however, commended the Court of Appeal for suspending proceedings in a case involving some political parties, describing the decision as a step towards preserving due process and constitutional order.

He praised the appellate court for granting a stay of proceedings against an earlier ruling of the Federal High Court.

Urges INEC to Uphold Electoral Stability

Ugochinyere also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that its actions remain consistent with existing court judgments and electoral laws in order to avoid uncertainty in the political process.

He stressed the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring that all stakeholders operate within the framework of the Constitution ahead of the 2027 elections.

Calls for Protection of Democratic Institutions

In his closing remarks, the lawmaker appealed to President Bola Tinubu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the National Judicial Council, and other relevant authorities to continue strengthening democratic institutions and protecting political participation across the country.

He warned against actions capable of undermining democratic stability ahead of the next general elections.
